Turning our sweet girl’s nursery into a toddler room was hard enough, but turning that toddler room into a big girl room was just as incredibly hard. Good grief! This mama stuff is so hard on the heart! Mine is in a constant state of sheer joy and utter heartbreak, all at the same time. ššš these sweet girls of mine! Although I am totally in love with how the room turned out, I am NOT totally in love with what it represents- that my baby’s no longer a baby! It would be selfish of me to make her stay a baby forever, right? To push the “pause” button just for a bit? If only childhood was like tv and we parents could pause it for a bit, rewind and slow-mo the amazing parts, stop the hard or scary or just plain awful parts. Wouldn’t that be amazing!! But never would I fast forward! NEVER! I want to savor EVERY. SINGLE. SECOND! This. All of this because we went from a toddler room to a big girl room! Silly mama! You know what I mean though.
Anyway, as far as the room goes, we really didn’t change a whole lot. We kept the same wall color, rug, curtains and dresser. We changed out the bed to the ivory day bed that my grandparents gave me when I was a teenager. We won’t discuss my age, but does that make the bed an antique or is it vintage?
I found this amazing shabby chic quilt at Target last summer and had to purchase it on the spot! It was part of their
Shabby Chic bedding collection and had matching sheets. My daughter is in LOVE with the color blue. Like over the moon, in LOVE with blue! When she was a little younger she would say, “I’m sessed with blue mama!” This blue, to me, is the perfect, girly blue. It reminds me of Cinderella. It’s so light and airy. And in some way, magical. I really, really love it! As for the pillows, they are from Target as well. The
bicycle and the
pink dot one was from their online collection. The pink dot one actually has a large butterfly on the front, but I liked the look of the back the best. We found the round, white ruffle pillow and the
rectangle rosette pillow in store. I just glued the pink flower to the center of one and pearlized ivory buttons to the other.
I also found the white bed canopy at Target. It too was part of the Shabby Chic bedding collection. I had these glitter pastel butterflies left over from my baby’s first birthday party and decided they would be the perfect way to add color and a little whimsy. If you haven’t already read about it, check out our
Very Hungry Caterpillar 1st birthday party.
You would think that the hardest part of making the big girl switch would have been the bed, but it was actually the chair! That chair has (we still have it) so many memories wrapped up in it. So many stories were read in that chair. So many night-night snuggles were shared in that chair. So many tender moments nursing were spent in that chair. So much love is that chair! That chair was the last to go. I promised my little tutu that if she didn’t like the new desk and chair that we would move it out in an instant. What I was really thinking was that if I didn’t like it, I would move the chair back in an instant. Baby steps. For two days, that new beautiful desk and chair sat in their new home, blocked completely from sight by one very large, soft, well-loved, going-to-be-missed, can’t-let-it-go, chair. And finally, I let it go. I said goodbye to that chair and said goodbye to the toddler room. Goodbye to my baby and hello to my big girl.
And doesn’t that desk and chair look so good there? We found both at Hobby Lobby along with the adorable birdhouse. Can’t get enough of that birdhouse color! It’s so fresh! I want to paint everything that color!
I “wallpapered” the inside of the birdhouse with cute scrapbook paper. My big girl likes to organize all of her necessities there. A girl’s got to keep her flashlights, tape measure, painted rock collection, gel pens, and sunglasses handy! All my fears were for nothing, she loves sitting at her desk working on her “computer” or reading a book like a big girl.
But she’ll always be my baby!
