What is quilling?

Simply put, quilling is the art of rolling different lengths and widths of paper, shaping and gluing them in simple or elaborate designs.  The history of quilling is fascinating! It can be traced back as early as the 15th century when French and Italian monks and nuns of the Renaissance cut the gilded edges off of books and used them to adorn religion books, paintings and artifacts.  During the Victorian era, quilling was considered an appropriate activity of leisure for women.  They quilled using their hat pins to decorate furniture, jewelry, purses, etc.   Some believe the term “quilling” came to be used because paper was rolled over the end of a goose quill.  Examples of quilling can even be seen from Colonial times!  Today, quilling is starting to make a come back and is rapidly growing in popularity.
