Candy Heart Math:
This activity was inspired by my childhood days of sneaking into my mom’s box of chocolates. I loved stealing little bites of each one, trying to figure out which one was the caramel. I got smarter over the years and eventually used a toothpick to pick away at the chocolate on the bottom so as not to be so obvious, lol! There’s no chocolate or caramel in this activity, but it’s a sweet one for practicing math with your littles.
We found these really nice addition flash cards in the Target Dollar Spot in the fall. If you don’t have a set, you can easily make some using index cards or paper. We also used cupcake liners and a heart shaped cake pan we already had on hand. And of course, a bag of conversation hearts. We use ours every year and keep them stored in a mason jar until we need them again. Everyone knows not to eat these. Dollar Tree has cute heart serving trays, cupcake liners and conversation hearts.
Select a math problem and have your Valentine use candy hearts to figure out the answer. Next, have them look for the answer written on a cupcake liner. Have them place the conversation hearts in the appropriate liner. Continue with another math problem.
If your sugar isn’t old enough for math, eliminate the flashcard portion of this activity and have them place the appropriate number of candy hearts in each liner.
If this activity isn’t challenging enough, write larger numbers and use more difficult math problems.
Graphing:
We found this graph online years ago and laminated it for multiple usage. There are many blank graphs available online or you can simply draw one. Give your sweetie pie a handful of convo hearts and have them graph out the colors. Then, ask questions about their completed graph. Which color has the most? Which color has the least? What is yellow plus blue?
Counting:
We found this worksheet online years ago too. If you know where it came from, please let us know so we can give them credit. Have your little lovey place the appropriate number of candy hearts next to each number. If you don’t have the worksheet, you can easily draw one up.
Number Recognition:
We found this awesome worksheet on I Heart Crafty Things a few years ago. Simply call out a number and have your sweetie place a candy heart on it. You could even play do this with two or more “players”. Give each a worksheet and call out the numbers. Whoever gets the most correct is the winner.
